Leage: Learning Games for elder Europeans

LEAGE stands for LEARning Games for elder Europeans. It's a project of the Lifelong Learning Programma – Grundtvig (Adult Learning). The LEAGE project lasted from 1st of January 2011 for two years.

People keep developing themselves and learn their whole lives. If people age, it is important to offer possibilities for education, that at the same time improves communication and social interaction, but is also fun. Traditional learning possibilities focus on mainly youth, demanding physical presence in a learning institution, or demand ICT knowledge withing an eLearning environment. Elderly can encouter problems to participate in this because of mobility constraints and inaccesible ICT. Furthermore, the contact of the teaching material is often not well in tune with the needs and wishes of the elderly.

LEAGE focusses on the development of innovative 'lifelong learning' ICT for elderly in Europe, with a special focus on the accessibility and attractiveness of these learning possibilities. LEAGE expects that educative (social network) computer games could contribute to this. These computer games are developed to increase the competences of elderly in the field of care, travellings, foreign languages, technology, etc. The attractiveness and the gaming feature had an encouraging influence on the continuity of the participation.

By offerening mulitplayer, with for example children and grandchildren, LEAGE could help elderly maintaining and even increasing their social network. Furthermore, the contect of the teaching material will pool the specific teching needs of the target group. The computer games are developed and evaluated with end users, in three European countries: the Netherlands, Spain and Greece. Next to Stichting Smart Homes, Ananz Ouderenzorg from Geldrop also participated in the LEAGE project. Together with Smart Homes, Ananz mainly focussed on the evaluation of the computer games.
